How to Choose Your Snowboard

Choosing a snowboard can be overwhelming if you don't know where to start. There are hundreds of models, shapes, flexes, and technologies. In this guide, we explain the key aspects so you can make the best decision based on your skill level and riding style.
1. Define your skill level and riding style
Before looking at brands or prices, the most important thing is to be honest about your current skill level. A board designed for advanced riders can make your life miserable if you're just starting out.
- Beginner: look for boards with a soft flex; they are forgiving of mistakes and make learning easier.
- Intermediate: you can explore more versatile boards with a medium flex.
- Advanced: stiff and directional boards will give you more responsiveness and precision.
2. Choose the right shape
The shape of the board determines how it performs on the snow. There are three main types:
- Directional: designed to go forward. Ideal for freeride and powder.
- Twin: symmetrical, perfect for parks and freestyle. Works equally well in both directions.
- Directional Twin: a hybrid of both. The most versatile for all types of terrain.
"The perfect board doesn't exist — the perfect board exists for you, on your mountain, with your style."
3. Flex matters more than you think
Flex is measured from 1 to 10. Soft boards (1-4) are easier to handle and forgiving of mistakes. Stiff boards (7-10) require precision but offer more responsiveness at high speeds.
Surfin Tip: If in doubt between two flexes, choose the softer one. It's always better to progress to a stiffer board than to get frustrated with one you can't control.
4. Length and width
The appropriate length depends on your weight and style. As a general rule, when the board stands upright, it should reach between your chin and your nose. Shorter boards are more agile; longer boards float better in powder.
Width is crucial if you have large feet (over EU 44). Make sure your feet don't extend too far over the edges, or you'll have toe/heel drag issues when turning.
